Killing Without Motive

Aug 26

Hey there foamers! Looks like yesterday’s blahg fired some people up! EXCELLENT. The forums are working properly (closed). Granted, the 1000 word limit is unfortunate, but perhaps it will force more focus in replies. Yeah right.

Anyway, moving on to a different subject, I wanted to make a comparison/contrast between the xbox murders that we discussed a while back and the recent Christian campers’ murders in Jenner. While both were brutal and mind boggling, the campers’ murders scare me more. That nothing was stolen, no one was sexually assaulted and it seems that the kids were “nice”, makes the murders seem darker to me.

Killing without motive – remember Raskolnikov from Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment? He committed murder because he felt he was superior to other people, that he had overcome philosophical hurtles and emotion-based morality and was above the law. He was trying to be Nietzsche’s Superman. Of course, Raskolnikov is ultimately undone by his need to confess his crime.

My question is whether or not the person(s) who shot the campers will feel this same need to confess. Will this person or these people become consumed by their own guilt or just need to share what they have done?

My hope is that the perpetrator(s) will confess. Otherwise, we are left without a moral to the story. It would be like if Crime and Punishment ended after Raskolnikov committed the murders, and provide us with another signal of the end of our innocence and a deepening sense of our limited freedom. After all, who is not going to think twice when considering camping on a northern California beach?

Yesterday, the xbox murder story seemed puerile. Today, with more details being offered, it seems downright evil. I read the description of the events, most notably, the beating of one girl that was so bad even dental records were unable to identify her. My stomach turned. I mean, come on guys. What the hell were you thinking? What kind of rage sustains itself to such an extent?

According to the report, the murderers were squatting in a house belonging to the parents of the girl who could not be identified. They were thrown out. They left the game system and clothes behind. I’m not sure why the girl kept the items instead of boxing them up and handing them over. Perhaps more of the story will unfold.

I hope this doesn’t turn into a “video games made them do it” scenario. I love video games, even violent ones, and I can’t conceive of doing something like this. This type of anger and revenge goes beyond blaming one particular entertainment. It’s a macho “no one’s getting over on me” mentality gone crazy.

My main concern right now is how a person decides that murdering six people over an xbox and some clothes is justifiable (especially when they were illegally in the house to begin with). Can a person like this be reformed? Are we better off locking them up for good without the possibility of parole. Or are we better off putting them down like unwanted pets? I’m sure if the victims were my friends or family, I would want to take these guys out into the streets and beat them to death with their precious xbox.

HELL’S BELLS! I just got back from the coast (Bodega Bay/Guerneville) and there’s been a mass murder over an xbox! I like the console as much as the next guy, but for the love of burgers and sushi, they have a whole bunch of extras down at the Wal-Mart. And something tells me the perps are intimately familiar with their neighborhood Wal-Mart.
