The Truths

I worked both yesterday and today on the book and made some good progress. I’m well into part two, now, which deals primarily with the main characters transition from child to adult.

I have a plan, but it is just a rough outline with some notes here and there. The notes are things my characters might say or do that I find compelling.

But usually, the real shit comes out of nowhere, out of being in the moment, living the characters lives for them.

It’s more than voyeuristic; more than godlike. Often, what comes out in the writing is so self-referential, that I sit back shake my head. At these times, I feel like the whole project will work, that it will ultimately be ‘worth reading.’

Here’s one such passage that is as much about writing as it is about the characters own psychology. It’s from the latest section:

The human mind does not conceal the truth from us. It merely shows us a myriad of possible truths, and we select the one that meets our needs at the time, even if it is not the most accurate.
