Yard Sign Fight

Timing is everything. I’ve had the following post sitting in my “drafts” file for over a week. Suddenly, the person I discuss in it leaves a message on the soon-to-be-new WIF site that reads like a swift kick to the boys. So without further delay, here’s the post, fresh out of the draft pile.

I don’t really follow local politics. Keeping up with world affairs and celebrity gossip fills most of the space I reserve for news in my brain. However, now that I have a 19 month old son named Hayden and deepening roots in Woodland, I feel that taking an interest in local government is becoming more useful, if not necessary.

Especially when the local government takes an interest in me.

A few months back, then-Mayor and County Supervisor candidate Matt Rexroad saw a story I helped write for InsideWoodland.com and bought a copy of Interview, a little film we at WIF made two years ago. He liked it enough to post some comments on his blog, which was enough to get my attention.

Two weeks ago, I received a note from Matt asking for my support in his bid to win the race for Yolo County Supervisor.

I haven’t called Matt with questions because I can’t decide what I would ask him first.

“So, Matt, how do you keep the collars of your knit shirts from curling?”

“Do you own an Xbox 360? If the answer is no, do you wish you owned an Xbox 360? If the initial answer was yes, what is your gamertag?”

“Did you know that InsideWoodland.com is actually written entirely by a collection of robot poodles?”

“About the election runoff between you and current County Supervisor Frank Sieferman, would you agree to giving the election to whomever wins best 2 out of 3 games of Dance Dance Revolution at the County Fair Mall?”

I’m thinking of supporting Matt, but I really don’t know that much about his politics. There’s a ton of information about him on the internet, but what I hear from people that I’ve spoken to is that he’s fairly conservative.

Frequent foamers know that I happily cruise the political spectrum from Peace and Freedom whacko to Liberatarian militia-man, so I don’t usually fall in with typical conservative politics. For instance, I want God out of ALL parts of government (not just the Oval Office), I want certain drugs legalized, I want less government involvement in personal affairs, and I want to keep my collection of automatic weapons stacked neatly by the front door, just in case.

So if Matt is, indeed, conservative, I might not agree with many of his political goals. But I like him. I like his Web site, his dedication, his energy and his beautiful bald head. So the question becomes, “do I support you just because I think you’re a good guy?”

I’ll have to answer this question before I consider placing a sign on our front lawn. As you probably know, election yard signs are like tiny soldiers for local politicians, and taking a stance is like declaring war on neighbors with opposing views.

Luckily, I have that collection of automatic weapons by the door.

“Hayden, son, if you’re going to hold it wrong, you need to put down Papa’s uzi, okay? Here, play with the glock.”

I’m a proud Rexroad supporter even though he is in an entirely different political spectrum than me.

Just talk to his opponent for a few minutes- you’ll get on the bandwagon real quick.

Oh- Matt also has nice penmanship. Legible, yet still masculine.

Partisanship counts for little on a local level, in my opinion. Awareness of, and a genuine appreciation for the things that make your community unique and special is much more critical. Matt epitomizes this, and therefor, gets my revote.

Stop oil production, Impeach Bush, go universal healthcare, close the borders, legalize marijuana, mandate racial profiling, keep the internet free, and all that…

There actually is no god, and I can prove it.
